Cardiology
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology)
Dr. Bill Tyrrell is a 1992 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, he spent four years in small animal practice in Northern Virginia, where he became fascinated with cardiology and echocardiography. He then began a cardiology residency program at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency credentials with Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates and achieved Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the College of Cardiology in 1999. Dr. Tyrrell strives to fully educate his clients about the cardiac disease found within their pets. Interactive communication is a very important part of his examination, consultation, and follow-up treatment.
Dr. Tyrrell recently presented at the 2009 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum in Montreal as well as the 2007 American Veterinary Medical Association conference in Washington, DC. Currently, he is the President of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and has served on its Board of Directors for the past six years. He is a past president of the Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and the Virginia Tech (VMRCVM) Veterinary School Alumni Society. He is also a past chair of the VMRCVM Curriculum Advisory Board. Dr. Tyrrell was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in 2003 by the VA Tech Alumni Association. He lives in Leesburg with his wife, two young daughters and his cat, Chianti. In his rare personal time, he enjoys golfing, fishing and cheering on the Hokies.

Dr. Pasieka joined CVCA as a resident in July of 2006. After graduating at the top of her class with a veterinary degree from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, she completed an internship with Oradell Animal Hospital in New Jersey. Prior to joining CVCA, she worked as a primary care veterinarian in her home state of New York.
Dr. Pasieka has a strong interest in delivering quality, compassionate care for companion animals. In her spare time, Gina enjoys Shutzhund and loves to work with sporting breeds of dogs. Dr. Pasieka’s husband is a board certified Internist in Leesburg, Virginia. They share their home with a cat, Armand, and an Italian Greyhound, Dexter.
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology)
Dr. Peckens joined CVCA as Chief Resident in June of 2008. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from St. Mary's College of Maryland and subsequently earned his veterinary degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a rotating emergency/specialty medicine internship with a regional referral hospital. Prior to joining CVCA, he was employed by Animal Emergency and Critical Care at The LifeCentre of Leesburg, Virginia, as an emergency clinician.
Dr. Peckens’ professional interests including minimally invasive interventional catheterization procedures, canine cardiomyopathies, and evidence based neutraceutical support of the cardiac patient. Dr. Peckens strives to provide optimal care tailored to each individual patient. Open and effective communication are a cornerstone of his daily interactions with his clients and collaborating primary care veterinarians in his effort to optimize his patient’s quality and quantity of life. Dr. Peckens and his wife share their Herndon, VA, home with four cats and their beloved Doberman-mix, Sadie. In his free time, he enjoys backcountry hiking, playing guitar, cooking/grilling, and playing soccer.
Internal Medicine
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Dr. Justin received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University, and performed his internship and residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. He was board certified in veterinary internal medicine in 1996.
In 2002, Dr. Justin received the Connie Leifer Award, named by New York Magazine as "one of the top veterinary specialists in the NY metropolitan area."
Dr. Justin medical interests include ultrasound, endoscopy, all areas of internal medicine, including endocrinology, gastrointestinal disease, and metabolic disease.
Dr. Justin is an avid outdoorsman and private pilot.
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Dr. Miller received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from North Carolina State University. She performed her internship with Darien Animal Hospital in Connecticut and her residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Miller was board certified in veterinary internal medicine in 2003.
Dr. Miller has been providing focused care for patients with multifaceted medical illnesses, their owners and family veterinarians for over 10 years and for the last 3 years, in Northern Virginia. She has a special interest in immune-mediated diseases and has conducted research in the area of canine immune-mediated hemolytic anemia.
Dr. Miller and her husband share their home with a pug named Stormie. She is a licensed pilot and a volunteer for Angel Flight and the Homeland Security Emergency Response Team.
Oncology
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology)
Dr. Khanna is a graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His specialty training included a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario, followed by a residency in internal medicine and oncology at the University of Minnesota. He is board certified with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology). Dr. Khanna’s training in cancer research includes a PhD from the University of Minnesota, where he studied immunotherapy of metastatic cancers, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, where he was a Senior Staff Fellow at the National Cancer Institute.
Since moving to the Washington, D.C. area, he has been able to couple his research interests with his love for clinical veterinary oncology through his work with The Oncology Service, LLC, and his development of the Animal Clinical Investigations, LLC.
Dr. Khanna is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Veterinary and Comparative Oncology, Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and the American Journal of Veterinary Research. He has authored several manuscripts and textbook chapters in the field of veterinary oncology and cancer biology.
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology)
Dr. Christina Manley earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ohio State University. She then completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Red Bank, New Jersey. After her internship, Dr. Manley pursued a three-year residency in medical oncology at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. During that time, Dr. Manley was part of the clinical team that conducted studies using immune-based therapies to treat canine melanoma and canine lymphoma. Dr. Manley has recently joined The Oncology Service at TLC in Leesburg, Virginia. Dr. Manley has experience treating all forms of cancer with a particular professional interest in histiocytic sarcoma and myeloid neoplasms. She is also actively involved in clinical research evaluating new therapies for common canine and feline tumors such as lymphoma and mast cell disease.Dentistry & Oral Surgery

Dr. Chamberlain is an AVDC board-certified specialist in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery, one of just over 100 veterinarians in the world to have earned this advanced training and degree. He established AD&OS in 1999 with a commitment to specialty oral and dental care for family pets.
Dr. Chamberlain, who was raised in Central New York State, attended State University of New York at Buffalo on a full football scholarship. He received his BA and MS degrees in Biology from SUNY at Buffalo and is an honors (Phi Zeta) graduate of Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.
Dr. Chamberlain owned and operated a small animal hospital and was in private general veterinary practice for 18 years. He is a regular educator and trainer in the area of veterinary oral health and is a frequent lecturer on oral health topics. He is past member and chairperson of the AVDC Credentials Committee and currently a member of the AVDC Board of Directors.
Dr. Chamberlain has been married to his wife, Julie, for over 33 years. Together they have a daughter, son, one grandson, four cats and a dog. Dr. Chamberlain is physically active, loves history and is an avid golfer.
MRI/CT Advanced Imaging
Dr. Uzzle was born in upstate New York and moved to Virginia at the age of 14 and now considers Virginia his home. His love for animals and interest in veterinary medicine began through the personal experiences he had with his own pets. Seeing the care and compassion that veterinarians displayed for his animals made him want to do the same for others. Dr. Uzzle graduated with honors from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998 and was in private practice in the area until 2008 when he joined the TLC imaging team. He was recruited because of his thorough case work-ups and his attention to detail. With clinical interests in cardiology, neurology, anesthesia, pain management and advanced imaging, he was ideal for The LifeCentre. Dr. Uzzle works very closely with the neurologists at Bush Veterinary Neurology Service and has formed many beneficial relationships with internists, criticalists and anesthesiogists over the years. He is committed to the advancement of veterinary medicine by providing clients and local veterinarians advanced imaging through CT and MRI. Ophthalmology

Dr. Paul A. Gerding, Jr., MS, DACVO received his undergraduate degree at Iowa State University and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (1984) and master of science degrees at the University of Illinois. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and maintains an adjunct professor appointment at University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He has been an invited speaker at both the national and international level. His research and practice interests include ocular pharmacology and evaluation of therapeutics and devices to enhance surgical success.Associate Doctor
Dr. Micki Armour attended Colby College where she received her degree in Biology and Performing Arts. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She then completed a rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Armour joined the residency program at Eye Care for Animals in 2008 and practices alongside other veterinary specialists at the Eye Care for Animals located within The LifeCentre in Leesburg, Virginia. She is also available to see equine cases at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg.Emergency/Critical Care
Medical Director, Emergency and Critical Care
Dr. Barnes attended the University of Maryland, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1978. As our most well-seasoned veterinarian, in 1982, she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine, Tuskegee, Alabama, where she graduated as a Dean’s List member with High Honors. In 1996, Dr. Barnes completed an alternative track residency program with credentials approved in Emergency Critical Care.
Dr. Barnes is a past President of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society as well as the District of Columbia Academy of Veterinary Medicine. She is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and past President of the Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Barnes is a Veterinary Instructor and Consultant for Region Three of the United States Police Canine Association. She lives her life-long passion in emergency critical care medicine and surgery and enjoys teaching and facilitating this discipline to all interested.
Her special interests include sonography, advanced imaging and emergent surgical techniques. She insists upon comprehensive pain management and is an advocate for her patients and their families.
Dr. Barnes lives with her husband, also a veterinarian, and they have five furry children, all of whom are rescued pets: two American Staffordshire Terriers named "Aspen" and "Opie," and three cats, "Dexter," "Thor" and "Charlie." As a previous marathon runner, Dr. Barnes is also PADI-certified (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and enjoys scuba and the outdoors whenever possible.
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care
Dr. Leonard received her Bachelor of Science degree in Pathobiology from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois Veterinary School, located in Champaign-Urbana, IL, and performed her residency at the Veterinary Institute of Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care in Milwaukee, WI.
Dr. Leonard also completed an ACVECC-approved three-year residency in emergency and critical care at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. Dr. Leonard is board certified through the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
She is a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Leonard is a noted author and has given numerous lectures to law enforcement canine handlers, laypersons, children, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and residents training to be Diplomates.
Dr. Leonard's special interests include nutrition, pain management, and intensive care nursing techniques.
Dr. Reese served 4 1/2 years as a veterinary assistant in emergency practice prior to attending veterinary school at Washington State University, Pullman, WA. She went on to attend Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID, where she graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. Dr. Reese received her veterinary degree from Washington State University in 1995, where she also graduated Cum Laude. She spent three years at a small animal private practice, and has 11 years emergency medicine practice experience. She joined the AECC team in 2002.
Dr. Reese is a member of the National Veterinary Honor Society, the Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society, and has been a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association for 14 years. Her medical interests include emergency medicine, critical care medicine, theriogenology, and small mammal and reptile medicine.
Dr. Reese has five cats: two Ragdolls named "Christopher" and "Jinx," a Siamese named "Gremlin," and two Maine Coons named "Kittebunkport" and "Maistro." She also has three dogs, a Mini-Aussie named "Pip," a Shih Tzu named "Chaz" and a Bassett Hound named "Dyson," as well as two horses, a half-Arabian named "Tori," and "Majik," who is 7/8 Arabian. Dr. Reese's hobbies include endurance riding and competitive trail riding, scuba diving, and science fiction books and movies.
Dr. Proulx began her career by studying anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation, she spent time in Lopburi, Thailand, where she worked in the veterinary department of a wild animal rescue center.
Dr. Proulx went on to pursue a career in veterinary medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2005. She graduated with honors, and was inducted into The Society of Phi Zeta, the honor society of veterinary medicine. She completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Following her internship, Dr. Proulx relocated to Virginia, and worked for a year and a half at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center as a staff veterinarian in the emergency and critical care department.
Dr. Proulx joined AECC in 2008. Dr. Proux is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Her recreational interests include hiking, camping, rock climbing, traveling and speaking Thai. Dr. Proulx shares her home with her cats: "Foxy," "Bernard," and "Anna."
Dr. Loveland worked as a Licensed Veterinary Technician while working her way through undergraduate school at the University of Maryland, which was completed at Washington State University. She graduated with a double major—a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science as well as in Biology. She completed a Master’s degree in Microbiology, and went on to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine through Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, St. Kitts, West Indies. Dr. Loveland completed her internship in emergency and critical care at the Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, OR.
Dr. Loveland joined AECC in May 2006. Her medical interests include completing a residency in emergency and critical care in the near future, emergent surgery, and working with involved and intense critical care cases.
Dr. Loveland has numerous pets, including "Kanga," a coyote/husky cross, "Chance," a Pointer/Pit Bull cross, "Kamiack," a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd cross, "Forrest," an Irish/English Setter cross, "Seamus," an Irish Setter, three cats named "Grizzly," "Wheat" and "Otumbishi," two cockatiels named "Piranha" and "Nemo," as well as many wildlife rehabs and rescue domestic pets.

Dr. Bush was an English major at College of the Holy Cross and a naval officer prior to graduating near the top of his class at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. He then completed a rotating internship in medicine and surgery at NC State University. Dr. Bush then returned to University of Pennsylvania for a residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery, where he earned research and teaching awards. He settled into the DC metro area and practiced locally until launching Bush Veterinary Neurology Service in 2005. Bill is married to Christina Barr, a veterinarian and PhD in neuroscience who works at NIH. Neurology/Neurosurgery – Medical Director
A native of Shepherdsville, KY, Dr. Jarboe graduated from the Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. After spending a year in private practice and two years in a 24-hr referral hospital as an emergency clinician, she began a three-year neurology residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia. After completion in 1999, Dr. Jarboe stayed on as a clinical instructor overseeing the neurology/neurosurgical practice as well as providing instruction to students, interns and residents in neurology/neurosurgery. In 2001, Dr. Jarboe accepted a position at a busy multi-specialty veterinary referral hospital in Houston. In 2003, she had the opportunity to join a neurology-only veterinary practice in Las Vegas where she was involved in the training of three neurology residents, all of whom have gone on to become Diplomates in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Neurology). Dr. Jarboe has presented lectures at both the local and national level, as well as co-authored several book chapters and scientific articles pertaining to veterinary neurology. She was the recipient of the 2003 College of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University Young Achiever’s Award and also received the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award from Eastern Kentucky University Department of Agriculture’s College of Business and Technology. Her passion lies in all aspects of neurosurgery with a particular interest in brain and cervical neurosurgery. Dr. Tiches received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from
Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed
an internship at Michigan Veterinary Specialists before entering a
neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, which she
completed in 1996, becoming board certified in 1997. She remained at the
university and served as a Clinical Instructor in Neurology for one
year before relocating back to the DC metropolitan area. She joined BVNS
in 2007 and oversees the residency program. Dr. Tiches and her husband
live in suburban Maryland along with their lovable lab, Quinn and beagle

Dr. Young received a Master of Science degree in Anatomy and
Neurobiology from Colorado State University where he also received his
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He spent the first few years out of
school working in general practice. In 2007, Dr. Young completed a small
animal medicine and surgery internship at South Paws Veterinary
Specialty and Emergency Center before being accepted as the first
resident into the BVNS residency program in July of 2008. A Colorado
native, he and his wife have settled in Northern Virginia with their
Border Collie/Shepherd mix. They are enjoying exploring the nation’s
capital as well as hiking, fishing and camping. Resident in Neurology/Neurosurgery
A graduate of Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007, Dr. Hague then completed a general internship at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center and Darien Animal Hospital in Connecticut. In 2008/2009, she completed a Neurology internship at the Center For Veterinary Specialty Care just outside Dallas. Away from the office, Dr. Hague enjoys dancing, sampling international foods and watching independent films. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Hague is glad to be closer to home. She now resides in Leesburg, VA, with her Old English Sheepdog, Cayenne. Intern in Neurology/Neurosurgery
Dr. Cuff is a graduate of St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine. After a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Center for Specialized Veterinary Care on Long Island, NY, he joined BVNS as the first neurology intern in the fall of 2009. He is now a neurology/neurosurgery resident. From Great Britain, Dr. Cuff loves to travel and is a PADI-certified rescue diver.Surgery/Rehabilitation

Dr. Anke Langenbach, owner and Chief Surgeon, is a Diplomate of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons. She earned her veterinary degree in 1992 from the University of Munich, College of Veterinary Medicine in Germany. Dr. Langenbach was awarded a scholarship allowing her a combined American and German education. She spent most of her third year of veterinary school at Kansas State University and part of her fourth year at Ohio State University, Cornell University, and Animal Medical Center of New York. After receiving her veterinary degree, she continued her studies with a 1-year internship followed by a 3-year residency program at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. After completion of her residency, she stayed with the University, accepting a lecturing position. Dr. Langenbach achieved Diplomate status as a board certified surgeon in 1998. Following her extensive academic career, Dr. Langenbach moved to Northern Virginia to work in private referral practice. Since her time at the University, Dr. Langenbach has published several articles, authored a book chapter, and has presented at many regional and local meetings, as well as national meetings held by the College of Veterinary Surgeons. She is currently participating in clinical research at the University of Pennsylvania involving neoplasia in feline patients and a clinical trial for Cisplatin Bead efficacy in both canine and feline patients. Dr. Langenbach was also featured in the book “In Their Shoes” by Debbie Reiber. She presented at the 2007 Annual Surgeons Summit and the European Surgeons Summit in Basel, Switzerland, in July 2008. Her other areas of research interest relate to bone and joint diseases and injuries of the canine patient. Dr. Langenbach lives with her husband, two sons, two dogs, and three cats in Vienna, VA. Dr. Lazar, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons,
graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary
Medicine in 1996. He continued his academic career with a 1-year
internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and followed
with a 3-year surgical residency at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists, a
large specialty referral practice in Maitland, Florida. Originally from
Northern Virginia, Dr. Lazar decided to move back to the area following
his academic studies. He joined our team of surgeons in 2002 and was
awarded Diplomate status as a board certified surgeon by the American
College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2003. During Dr. Lazar’s tenure with
Veterinary Surgical Center, he has actively pursued his interests in
orthopedic surgery, learning new techniques such as Cementless Total Hip
Replacements and TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) for the repair of
cranial cruciate tears. He was the first surgeon in Northern Virginia to
offer the TTA procedure. Dr. Lazar’s other area of interest is
laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. These procedures improve our ability to
diagnose and treat certain conditions with minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Lazar resides in Reston, Virginia, with his wife and two sons along
with two dogs and three cats. Practice Limited to Surgery
Dr. Prink received his veterinary degree from the University of
Minnesota in 2005. Following veterinary school, he completed a one-year
rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the
University of Georgia. Dr. Prink recently completed a small animal
surgery residency at the University of California-Davis. During his
residency, he completed supplemental training in arthroscopic surgery
and cementless total hip replacement. His primary area of research
interest was in the identification of biomarkers of osteoarthritis. His
professional interests include: fracture repair, arthroscopic surgery
and surgical correction of liver shunts.
Kasey Kephart graduated from Argosy University of Minnesota in 2002 with an Associate of Science degree as a Certified Veterinary Technician and certificate of wildlife and marine mammal science. She then continued her education at the University of Tennessee, where she became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. She has worked as a CVT for 8 years and as a Director of Rehabilitation for 2 years. She has a special interest in canine fitness and physiology. She is an outdoor adventurer and spends much of her time hiking, biking and camping. She is originally from Alexandria, MN; she now lives in Sterling, VA, with her English setter, “Gertie,” and her cat, “Oliver.”Dermatology

Dr. Hansen received his veterinary degree from the University of Missouri in 1980 and practiced small and large animal medicine for two years in Iowa before completing a small animal internship in Las Vegas from 1982-1984. He completed his dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania in 1986 and received board certification from the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 1992. Dr. Hansen is an adjunct Clinical Instructor at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology, the Academy of Veterinary Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the Society of Investigative Dermatology, the American Animal Hospital Association, and the D.C. Academy of Veterinary Medicine. He has served as the Dermatology Chairperson of the American Animal Hospital Association EXCEL committee (1990-1994), and served on the Education Committee of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology from 1992-1994. Dr. Hansen has authored numerous articles for veterinary journals and regularly speaks at veterinary meetings all over the United States.
Dr. Hansen lives in Fairfax with his wife, Judy, and his three sons. He is a certified referee for the Northern Virginia Swim League and the Virginia High School League. He is an avid sports fan and especially enjoys going to watch the Washington Nationals play. He and his family have a beagle appropriately named Trouble.
